The street children of Blantyre, Malawi.
For some children in Blantyre, Malawi, a life on the street is the only life they have known.
Some of the street children have run away from home because of physical or sexual abuse or because their relatives have accused them of being a witch.Others were neglected because their parents or guardians were using drugs and alcohol or have a mental illness which has left the child to fend alone.
For some children their guardians or relatives spend their days begging for money and the children were forced to help, it is business and the children can be harshly reprimanded if they do not do their part, their only way to escape is to live alone on the streets.
Unfortunately for some of the street children it is their choice to live this way. They have rebelled against the authorities in their home and find life on the street a welcomed freedom from rules. Though their lives are full of violence, hunger and disease, the allure of freedom from an authority figure is appealing enough to keep them from going home.
For all these children there is no option of returning home, they spend their days and nights on the streets of Blantyre.
Whatever their reason these children live on the streets and it puts them at extreme risk of physical and sexual abuse, hunger and disease. There are predators on the streets at night and these children have no way to defend themselves. They sleep together in market shacks and under cars for protection, using cardboard or debris to keep them warm. Their lives are in desperate need of hope and love.
This is why we want to reach them with one powerful demonstration of love- a healthy daily meal.
Lunchbowl now feeds 100-115 street children each week ( mostly boys aged 2-22) in Blantyre if you would like to help these children please contact us, we would appreciate your help!
